About 4B

Curriculum and Fourth Grade Highlights

Reading: Journeys - Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
Within our reading curriculum, students will actively participate in the exploration of a variety of fiction and non-fiction short stories encompassing diverse themes, reading strategies, and skill sets. This engagement will facilitate collaborative learning in group settings while also nurturing independent reading abilities within the classroom.

AR Reading: Accelerated Reading Program
Accelerated Reader (AR) serves as a computer program designed to oversee students' independent reading practice. Each child chooses a book and reads it at their own pace. Once the reading is completed, the children take a brief computer-based quiz. AR empowers children to independently select books tailored to their reading level instead of receiving assigned readings. This approach fosters a stimulating reading journey, guaranteeing a successful quiz outcome for your child.

Math: Sadlier

Students will focus on applying all four fundamental operations - addition, subtraction, multiplication and division - to successfully solve multi-step real word problems that feature multi-digit numbers. This learning extends to understanding relationships within fractions and decimals, as well as grasping concepts related to angles, graphs, and measurement.

Science: Science: A Closer Look - Macmillan-McGraw Hill

Students will explore three distinct areas of study: life science, earth science, and physical science. The curriculum will integrate hands-on experiments alongside both individual and collaborative projects. These projects will encompass the construction of models depicting Animal or Plant Cells, the creation of dioramas showcasing Moon phases, and active participation in collaborative projects such as the Biome and Solar System Projects.

Language Arts: Voyages in English - Loyola Press

In addition to grammar units, students will explore expository, descriptive, persuasive and narrative writing, culminating in the development of skills necessary for effective essay writing.

Social Studies: States and Regions - Houghton Mifflin Harcourt / On The Go In New Jersey - Cunningham

Through the development of map and globe skills, students will delve into discussions about various states and regions within the United States during the first half of the year. Students will also learn more about our home state, New Jersey! Students will work on a research project focused on the human characteristics of the United States as well as undertake the New Jersey County Cake Project. Students will bake and decorate their county, including any major landforms. Each individual county cake will then be assembled together to create the entire state of New Jersey!

Religion:  Be My Disciples - RCL Benziger

Students will learn age-appropriate catechesis rooted in biblical faith and the teachings of the church. The framework includes an exploration of the Ten Commandments and Beatitudes. Additionally, our educational approach involves integrating the Three Rs—Religion, Respect, and Responsibility—into our daily lives at school.

As a service project, we collect donations of clothing and food for local food pantries and shelters. We also make cards for men and women in our armed forces.
