Robotics Team

Created via the generosity of the AOOL Fathers Guild in the Fall of 2015 as a STEM initiative for AOOL students, RoboNation is the competitive championship robotics team for Academy of Our Lady.  It is a member of the Lego FLL league whose competitive season runs August through December every school year, and is demanding in terms of time commitments to prepare for regional qualifying events.

RoboNation is a team, and not a club.  Lego FLL league rules limit each team to a maximum of 10 members and 2 coaches.  We have limited participation to grades 6th-8th to aide in accommodating these imposed limitations. Student participation is contingent upon interest & ability to meet the required time commitments during the season, and the student’s history of academic excellence.  All membership request will be reviewed by Mr. Roberts, Principal of AOOL.

The competitions involve building a robot to complete various challenges in a 32 square foot arena to score as many points as possible in two and a half minutes.  There is also an event theme which changes year to year, which involves a research project & presentation of findings to the judges.  Teams are judged in a host of different categories against at host of different teams throughout the region & state.

During the August-December Robotics season our students will learn the following skills:

·         Goal Setting

·         Strategy Analysis

·         Time Based Project Management

·         Robot Building

·         Researching

·         Programming Lego EV3 Mindstorms

·         Presentation Skills

·         Marketing

·         Community Sharing

·         Accountability/Empowerment

·         Teamwork

·         Problem Solving

This is a great activity where the kids learn a great deal in a very short time period. We have a great deal of fun, while learning some very valuable life skills.

PARENTS INTERESTED COACHING – If you are interested in being a coach for next year’s season please reach out to Mr. Roberts.
