One Little Heart

Two little eyes to look to God.

Two little ears to hear his word.

Two little feet to walk his ways.

Two little lips sing his praise.

Two little hands to do his will,

And one little heart to love him still.

Traditional prayer from Wales

Welcome back to school!  I am hoping that the 2021-2022 School Year will see a return to some normalcy.  First Grade is an important year to begin mastering the foundational skills in Reading and Math.  We also explore the world around us through our Science and Social Studies curriculum.  And of course we learn to recognize the gifts we have as well as those who are role models of how to use those gifts in our Religion classes.  I am grateful to you for sharing your children with me this year and I look forward to guiding them on their learning journey.  I look forward to meeting you at Back to School Night on Thursday, September 16th.

Snack Time in First Grade

Snack sent to school with your first grader should be able to be eaten outside. We encourage finger food such as fruit, vegetables or crackers and a beverage. The snack should be easy for your child to manage on their own. Our goal is for the children to receive as much outside exercise and time to socialize with friends as possible.

Scholastic Books

Throughout the year you will be receiving Scholastic Book order forms. If you are interested in placing an order please turn the order in before the date indicated on the order form. Please attach a check, made out to Scholastic, to the form. Please do not send cash.

STEAM

STEM stands for Science, Technology,Art, Engineering, and Math.  It is an exciting approach to learning and teaching that stimulates the creative and investigative nature of young children.  In a STEAM classroom, students gain knowledge through project-based challenges, using the design process to find successful solutions.

The STEAM Design Process has four basic steps:

  • Plan: Students design a solution to problem or challenge
  • Create: Students build a model for their solution using the materials available to them
  • Test: Students test their model to see if their solution is successful
  • Ask: Students analyze the results and identify improvements could be made

The Design Process is repeated until a successful solution is reached.

Please visit our Magic Tree House Adventures, Lego Master Builder, and Steam Safari tabs on our web page to see how the STEAM Design Process is being creatively incorporated across all subject areas!

During the first few days of the 2017-2018 school year, the students of 1C went on a Reading Safari to discover what books Mrs. Coleman's library had to offer.  They found all sorts of books, especially Magic Tree House books!  It was fun to sit in the Safari Reading Nook with all of their new animal friends!

After all, in 1C, we are "Wild About Learning!"
