We do different types of writing all across the subject areas we also have a reading series that we use as a book Anthology which is the journey series and in our reading. We do stop and shots as we're reading these Post-it notes to take notes about the different things were thinking in our reading classes so that week write about them and extend and expand upon them later in our notebooks we also use the spelling workout which just gives us a little bit extra lessons in different sort of spelling strategies and different spelling patterns recognizing our work in science we use the textbook series of closer look and we start the year in life science and we do a number of different labs and activities that include making a spinal cord out of Lifesavers we make our own biomes and huge cardboard boxes and students bringing different materials from home to create their different ecosystem that they've been assigned math class we use the Sadlier mask series and accompanying workbook we there's a big push in fourth grade to really really have learned our multiplication tables while so that we can use them to sell problems and also use them to really start learning how to do that long division which is something it always makes everybody a little nervous in our religion classes we use the series be my disciples and we also later you're usually in the springtime tackle the Family Life series which is really just an extension of what we're already doing and religion talks a little bit more about families and relationships and how all of those things are God's gift to us and how we should approach take them and treat them accordingly in religion class in fourth grade we also do a study on the Beatitudes and also do a little bit more of work with the Bible Bible passages have to find them and how reading those Bible passages really help us grow in our relationship with God in social studies we do a number of different things there's a tremendous amount in the social studies curriculum for 4th grade the first thing we start on is our state and regions and we have learned now we're at the point in the are we where we have learned all of our states and capitals in the entire country we've learned their location the state's location we've learned the states capitals and the states of postal abbreviation work actually are big test now and then after we complete the study of the states and regions we move on specifically to study our state New Jersey we learned about his history about his job and about how it has contributed to the history of the United States overall especially in the context of the Revolutionary War we do a number of projects across the subject areas I really like the idea of students Working Hands On in the classroom both together and separately I think group project learning is some of the best kind of learning we do I'm very well aware of sometimes didn't learn much better from their stuff from their classmates than they could ever learn their teacher and I like to provide those opportunities for them in the classroom we also in addition to having a religion class really try to pull in religions all of the various areas you know science offers us an opportunity to experience God's wonder and awe and social studies offers us an opportunity to see how all of those pieces kind of fit together on the global scale we also use a number of computer programs to enhance and to encourage at home learning we have their computer program IXL where students can practice their math and grammar skills and we also have a reading program called Accelerated Reader where students read books of their own choosing and then R8 to take a comprehension tests which give teachers a really good idea as to where students are at in terms of their independent reading and their independent comprehension if you have any additional questions please reach out my email address is on our web page and as well as any other kind of information you're looking for specifically on any of the different materials we use in class that's also available on my web pages.
