 New Parent Guide

On the first day of school, the Home School Association (HSA) sponsors a coffee/tea reception for parents new and old in Community Hall. This is a great opportunity to mingle and get acquainted with your child's new classmate's parents.

For the first day of school, the children (Gr. 1-8) wear their summer uniform. This consists of the polo/golf style shirt, shorts, white socks, and sneakers.  There is a UNIFORM CLOSET where you may shop for your child prior to ordering uniforms from Flynn and O'Hara. The uniforms are in good condition and if your child's size is there, you can really save! If you would like information about the Uniform Closet, contact Sandy Kranenburg at 201-447-2133 or Alexandra Schael at 201-847-7610.

In some grades, NUT cards (No Uniform Today) are given for various reasons. NUT cards are not permitted on the first Friday of each month because the school will be attending Mass on those days.  Remember, please don't wear shirts with 'words' on them.  Athletic/gym shorts are not allowed.  Please be sure that girls' skirt and short lengths are school appropriate reaching past their fingertips with arms at their side.

Our Student Council often has a "Color Day." For a payment of usually $0.50, which is donated to a worthy cause, you child can opt not to wear his or her uniform; however, he or she does need to look neat and presentable (NO T-SHIRTS are permitted but jeans are allowed).  Athletic/gym shorts are also not allowed.  Please be sure that girls' skirt and short lengths are school appropriate reaching past their fingertips with their arms at their side.

Children are permitted to wear their own clothes on the day that they celebrate their birthday. Coordinate this with your child's teacher; your son or daughter can also bring in their favorite treat to share with the class.

The children have a 12:15 PM dismissal the first Friday of every month. Parents are welcome to attend the school Mass that day.

There are two class parents assigned to your child's class. They will be your contacts if there are any questions regarding class activities, projects, parent volunteerism or field trips.

At Back to School night, there will be a volunteer sheet available to sign up if you are interested in helping out both your class mothers or with HSA activities and events. It is important to share your email with the class mothers at this time; they will have a sign up sheet for this purpose. Much communication is done via email with regards to class parties, trips, announcements, etc.

All parents are encouraged to attend HSA meetings. Watch this website for dates and times.

Be sure to read the online school calendar where everything is clearly explained and important dates are posted as well.  You can subscribe to this calendar.  By subscribing to the calendar you will be alerted when there is a change.

The school sponsors a Secret Santa's Workshop in December and a Book Fair in the spring. Look for details as these events approach.

Parents are welcome to attend any school assembly such as those occurring during Catholic School Week, the last week in January.

If your child is absent, you must contact the school nurse Mrs. Lee. The direct line is (201) 444-3890. You may leave a message. When you child returns to school, he/she must bring a note explaining the absence.

Students bring their own lunches to school as well as a healthy snack. There is an optional pre-ordered lunch program from 2 local vendors.

The Green Envelope system is Academy of Our Lady's effort to conserve on paper and communicate any pertinent information to school families via their registered family email address. On Wednesday of each week, a reminder email will be sent advising families of that week's fliers and directing them to the school website www.academyofourlady.org . You may print any order forms through this system and send them into the school office via your child.

If at any time a circumstance arises that you may need the services of Before Care and/or After Care, you may make arrangements in the business office.

The school doors are alarmed and the only entry is the main entrance. Everyone must stop and sign-in in the office, and wear a name badge.

Please check out the rest of this website which contains a wealth of information regarding many aspects of life at Academy of Our Lady.

We hope you find this guide helpful and wish you a wonderful year at Academy of Our Lady!
