Curriculum and Second Grade Highlights
Our classroom has many advantages for learning. We have a Promethean Board, ELMO, an iPad, laptops, and an Echo Dot. We also have many learning centers for all the disciplines as well as a library of hundreds of books! Parents visit our classroom to share about art and music through the TICTOC program. They also share about their culture, special talents, jobs, and being a good citizen. Students complete many hands-on activities in the classroom and have fun learning! Our students attend five specials a week: Spanish, Music, Gym, Art, and Computers. They also enjoy the many after school activities and special events our school provides to support our pillars of Faith, Knowledge, Community, and Respect.
Religion: RCL Benziger – Be My Disciples
Students learn about our faith and how they live it each day. We do service learning projects (St. Jude Fundraiser, donate clothing/toys/food to those in need, make cards for others, make packages of items for the troops, and much more!). Second graders also receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Eucharist. We also host the Advent Prayer Service, a Communion Celebration Mass, and the May Crowning.
Communication Arts: Zaner Bloser – Superkids Reading Program
In second grade, students are ready to read text that is not phonetically controlled. They read grade-level literary books that promote growth in reading and informational texts in their SUPER magazines. At the same time, students review and consolidate essential phonics, spelling, and grammar skills and apply their skills in longer, more complex writing products (personal narratives, informative essays, opinion writing, poems, descriptive essays, and letter writing). Students also work on neat handwriting and start the foundation of cursive writing.
Mathematics: Sadlier
Students build upon the skills learned in first grade. They move onto more complex addition/subtraction that includes double digit addition/subtraction with and without regrouping, multi-step word problems, and adding three and four numbers. Students learn about place value to the hundreds, the basics of multiplication/division, time (hour/half hour/quarter hour), graphs (bar/picto/tally graphs), money and making change, and more!
Science: Savvas – Science: Elevate
The Savvas Elevate Science program for second grade is a comprehensive, student-centered K-8 science curriculum that utilizes a blended print and digital format to teach through phenomena-based inquiry and hands-on investigations. It aligns with new science standards, focusing on STEM, problem-solving, and literacy while guiding students through a problem-based activity called "Quest" to explore real-world phenomena and apply their scientific knowledge.
Social Studies: Macmillan McGraw Hill – We Live Together
Students learn about different types of communities and our government, how laws affect them, and what it means to be a good citizen. They also learn the geography of the earth and its natural resources. We discuss America’s history and learn about famous Americans that have changed our country for the better. We learn about goods/services, needs/wants, producers/consumers, and more!
