We will work on the Works of Mercy during the 2008-2009 school year.
Each month the children will work on a service learning project related to the theme.

September: Give Drink to the Thirsty
We learned about the properties of water. We learned that water can be a liquid, solid or gas. We read about how we use water and how we need to take care of this resource. The children brainstormed ideas of things that have water in them and we collected baby formula for Several Sources.
October: Feed the Hungry
The children collected food for the Food Pantry. We sorted the items according to their shape, as learned in Math...Cylinders, Rectangular Prisms and Cubes.
November: Pray for the Living and the Dead
In November the children participated in many service learning activities among which they made/measured/mixed some items for their Thanksgiving feast and then invited the staff members of the school who did not have a class with whom to celebrate Thanksgiving. They practiced how to be a good hostess/host and then shared their feast. We also collected money for Josi, our Christian Children's Fund child. We sorted and counted the money and wrote him a letter.
December: Clothe the Naked
The children are participating in the school-wide collection of mittens, pajamas and teddy bears. We read a story about a homeless lady and learned the difference between "needs" and "wants".
