1. My child doesn't seem to know what to do for homework.  Why?

The children are switching classes for the first time this year.  They are with Mrs. Hummel for  Language Arts and Science.  I have them for Reading, Math, and Social studies.  We both have areas on the white board in the front of our classrooms where homework is written.  It is there all day.  They have ample time to copy the homework in their assignment pads, which are provided by the school this year.  Mrs. Hummel and I use the first week to go over this big change with them.  Ask to see their assignment pad once in a while to see that they are copying their homework, including page numbers.

2. Why does my child forget to bring all of his/her books home?

They are usually in such a rush to go home after a busy day.  Go over the use of the assignment pad with them.  When they write down assignments they should note the books they'll need.  Color coding books, notebooks, and workbooks can help.  If it is habitual they may have to deal with a few late assignments before they begin to remember.  Coming in the room to help them pack up at the end of the day only delays their ability to begin to assume this task. This is the year for them to assume responsibility and independence.  They need to learn to be organized especially in preparation for the upper grades.  We would like to help them to learn this lifelong skill.
